Yes, the Babe really did set pins. This was during the World War II pinboy shortage, and he occasionally helped out at his favorite bowling lanes.

  According to contemporary reports, defense plant workers and military personnel were bowling around the clock during the war. The pinboy shortage became so severe that proprietors tried (unsuccessfully) to get Japanese-Americans released from internment camps to set pins.
