This was a classic Chicago Bowling alley with 16 lanes. The Sunday morning league in the 1960’s and 1970’s was an outstanding money league for pot games and boasted numerous characters. It could have been the host bowling alley for the movie Kingpin.

Thank for sharing the memories. I bowled at most of the Chicago houses during the late ’60s/early ’70s, but Major Rec was one I missed.

    • Ron Barthelt Says:

Don’t know why it reminded you of Kingpin, but I bowled in that league from ’69-’75. A big night (morning) at the right time (250 and 6 in a row pot roll-overs), you could make close to a grand. We used to call it Saint Majors. In those days, anyone who averaged 190+ was a big shooter.

My family owned and operated Major Recreation (Major Bowl). My dad was a pin spotter there for his uncles and aunt, John and Tony and Catherine. Doc was practicing his 9 ball skills nearby. David M.
